Differentiated Hands On Sight Word Folders

If you're new to this blog, a little background about me is that I am a special education teacher in NY. I provide pull out small group services for students with IEP's and "at-risk" students. Currently, I am focusing on 2nd grade. Many of my students are more than one whole grade level behind in reading. Additionally, they struggle to read kindergarten and/or first grade sight words. A professional goal I have set for this year, is to help these students master 80% of the kindergarten and/or first grade sight words.

I knew my approach had to be tweaked because sight words were being taught in their classrooms for the past two years, and they still found it challenging to retain them. So I decided to take a complete hands on approach to our sight word block. I am so pleased to say that I have seen HUGE progress in my kids and that even my most challenging behavior students, are engaged, learning, and loving class.

Below is a sneak peek at my newest product. The product provides detailed directions for setting up, organizing materials, establishing routines, and implementing the program. You can also check out the TpT listing here!

WHAT MAKES THE FOLDERS DIFFERENTIATED?

Before implementing this program take the time to assess your students individually. After completing the assessments generate individual lists for your kids. The list should only include the words that that student does not know. This will allow students to focus on and learn words specific to their needs. As time consuming as this can be, it is key to their success. It eliminates wasted opportunities, because they aren't working on words they already know, and it helps set clear expectations for each child.

IS THERE A LOT OF PREP WORK WITH THESE FOLDERS?

This program is what I call a "one and done" prep situation. You only have to prep the materials and folders ONE time for the ENTIRE year! The unit includes step by step directions with matching photographs to make set up easy peasy!

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

Students roll a dice to determine the hands on sight word activity they will complete for the day. Supplies are clearly labeled in the room so students will be able to gather materials and begin working independently. Students complete a series of 6 hands on activities over the course of a few days, using the same words, which in turn helps them master those words!

WHAT IF YOU WANT TO INCORPORATE OTHER ACTIVITIES?

Not a problem! This is completely editable! You can customize the sight word activities to make them match your classroom needs.

SNEAK PEEK!
